Justice is served in Los Angeles by court caterers

In the nine months she spent sequestered as a juror on the O.J. Simpson trial, Carrie Bess gained 50 pounds.

Fifty pounds.

And Harry and Gary Hindoyan are at least partially responsible.

The Hindoyan brothers have become the de facto house chefs for Los Angeles celebrity murder trials. The private caterers fed lunch to Bess and the rest of the Simpson jurors every day. Then the Hindoyans fed the Simpson civil trial jurors. They fed the juries who decided the fates of actor Robert Blake (not guilty of murdering his ex-girlfriend), the Menendez brothers (convicted of murdering their parents) and Reginald Denny's attackers (most found not guilty of attempted murder for beating the truck driver during the 1992 L.A. riots).

The employees of the downtown Los Angeles criminal courthouse love the Hindoyans' food.

Anti-affirmative action group enlists help of Missouri curator

COLUMBIA — As a University of Missouri curator, David Wasinger has sworn to uphold affirmative action laws in hiring and admissions at the system's four campuses.

As a private attorney, Wasinger and a colleague are aiding the effort to persuade voters in 2008 to dismantle racial and gender preferences in public employment, contracting and education.

Opponents of the anti-affirmative action proposal, known as the Missouri Civil Rights Initiative, call Wasinger's involvement a conflict of interest that also damages the university's credibility.

“This is an initiative that can do harm to the university and its admissions policy," said Jim Kottmeyer, a Democratic political activist. “Yet you've got a curator out there representing the group."

Wasinger, who initially declined to comment Wednesday, later said those concerns are politically motivated by allies of state Attorney General Jay Nixon, a Democrat who plans to challenge Republican Gov.

Jack Greenberg: Roberts, Breyer, Louisville, Seattle and Humpty Dumpty

I was among those who argued alongside Marshall in Brown. Nobody at that time had heard of affirmative action. It had not yet been recognized as a public issue until required of the construction industry by Richard Nixon in 1962 and as national policy by Lyndon Johnson in 1965. It never occurred to me or anyone else that we were arguing for a color blind constitution that would prohibit government from affirmatively preferring African-Americans by promoting integration. All others among surviving counsel for the Brown plaintiffs emphatically disagree with the Roberts characterization and I am confident that those no longer with us would disagree too. Judge Robert L. Carter, whom Roberts and Thomas cite as supporting their position, has contradicted them: ''All that race was used for at that point in time was to deny equal opportunity to black people....

(CNSNews.com) - Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama received about $1.5 million in contributions this year from college professors and others in the education field, outpacing the party's front-runner, Sen. Hillary Clinton, who got $940,000 from academics. Still, Clinton's near-$1-million second-place finish was almost as much as academia's total combined donations to leading Republican candidates Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani and John McCain. (See Complete Candidate Breakdown)That many college professors and academics lean to the political left is no surprise -- 76 percent of their donations went to Democratic candidates in the first two quarters of 2007. But the volume of their donations is increasing, according to an analysis by the non-partisan Center for Responsive Politics (CRP), which tracks money in politics.
