Governor To Announce Wastewater Response

BENTONVILLE -- Gov. Mike Beebe will respond to a $33 million request for a regional wastewater facility today, his office confirmed Tuesday.U.S. Sen. Mark Pryor, D-Ark., will also attend the governor's announcement on the Northwest Arkansas Conservation Authority request at 10 a.m. at the Bentonville Public Library. The conservation authority is a coalition of Benton County towns that requested low-interest bond assistance for a regional center to eventually serve all the cities' wastewater needs. The authority has requested both state and federal aid for the project in recent months, noting that the group was encouraged to form and build the regional plant to help the local environment and ease an ongoing battle with Oklahoma over phosphorus levels in the Illinois River. The regional approach has been touted as better for the environment because fewer plants will have to be built and stricter standards for wastewater can be met on a regional basis.Without the funding to pay for the pipeline system for the four initial users of the regional plant, customers of the system will pay an estimated additional $252 per year for sewer service for the first five years and an estimated $192 per year for 10 years after that.

FEMA to help trailer dwellers relocate

FEMA trailer dwellers concerned about formaldehyde fumes can request a new place to live without having to prove harm from the chemical or even that the chemical is present, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Monday.

"If people in trailers are feeling distress, if they feel unwell, if they simply feel anxiety or they want to get out of the travel trailer, FEMA will work to get them out of travel trailers," Chertoff said. "No ifs, ands or buts."

Though he promised replacement housing, he didn't specify what type, and he also warned that finding alternate living arrangements might take time and require moving some distance from where a trailer now sits.

"There's a limited amount of housing that's available in this area," he said.

Ft. Dix case going nowhere fast

A judge is adamant the trial of six men accused of plotting to attack soldiers at Fort Dix take place this year so the high-profile case can be resolved and the suspects, if they are not guilty, can get on with their lives.

The lawyers for the men say they cannot move so fast. The reason: The government's voluminous evidence, much of which must be translated from Arabic and Albanian.

In court Friday, U.S. District Judge Robert Kugler pushed back the start date of the trial from Oct. 9 to Nov. 5 and told defense lawyers he would authorize spending for more translators.

Defense lawyers had asked that the trial be delayed until at least May 2008.

The six men -- all foreign-born and in their 20s -- were arrested in May and accused of plotting a raid on the New Jersey military installation.
