DNA Test Clears Chris Rock Of Paternity

A lawyer for Chris Rock said Monday that a court-ordered DNA test proved Rock is not the father of a 13-year-old boy whose mother tried to sue the comedian for support earlier this year.

Rock's attorney, John Mayoue of Atlanta, said a Bulloch County judge sent results of the paternity test to lawyers on both sides of the case.

"The results of the test are that Chris Rock is not the father of this child," Mayoue said. "It is conclusive." .

Civil-union fight leads to federal court suit

New Jersey is attempting to strip the Camp Meeting Association of its rights of free speech and to freely exercise its religion, according to a federal suit that has stirred simmering passions about same-sex civil unions in this beachfront community.

The suit maintains that the state's Law Against Discrimination should be declared unconstitutional if it is used to prohibit the association from using its buildings in accordance with its religious beliefs.

The suit was filed electronically Saturday by the Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Alliance Defense Fund against J. Frank Vespa-Papaleo, director of the state's Division on Civil Rights, in response to an investigation undertaken by the division.

The division is looking into charges of discrimination against the association brought by two local same-sex couples for refusing to permit them to hold civil-union ceremonies in the boardwalk pavilion.

Children With Diabetes Win Assurance Of Legally-Required Services At School

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell joined representatives of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) to announce a landmark agreement that ensures California students who are classified as disabled because of diabetes will be safe at school and enjoy the same legally-required educational opportunities as their peers. The agreement clarifies the rights of eligible students with diabetes in every school district throughout the state.

"Through this cooperative agreement with the ADA, the CDE is committed to ensuring that all children with diabetes in California schools have access to legally required care during the school day," O'Connell said. "A lack of resources, uncertainty about how services are best delivered, and lack of clarity about state and federal requirements have in some instances caused hardship to parents of children with diabetes.

Lawyer says Fibernet suit could drag on for the next year

FiberNet said it is taking care of its customers in the wake of a telephone service outage earlier this month, but a lawyer who is seeking class-action status for a lawsuit against the company said he's getting dozens of calls daily from disgruntled customers.

Up to 11,000 FiberNet customers lost phone service July 10-11. The company has blamed the outage on an equipment failure in its switching office on Leon Sullivan Way.

Complete System Support Inc. of Parkersburg, Neurological Case Management Associates LLC of Charleston and H.E. Gene Sigman, a private investigator in South Charleston, filed a lawsuit against FiberNet on July 13 in Wood County Circuit Court. It alleges breach of contract, fraud and negligence.

Jim Peterson, lead attorney in the lawsuit, said he is getting dozens of calls each day from people and companies that were affected by the outage.

Van occupants survive pipe nightmare

A Texas woman said she is blessed to have escaped serious injury after a metal pipe smashed through her van Monday morning on U.S. Highway 79 near Greenwood.

Lisa McRae of Bastrop, Texas, was headed south on Highway 79 just before 11 a.m. Monday with her 12-year-old son when she slowed because a pickup in front of her had slowed. A truck belonging to Offshore Energy Services, of Oil City, was behind McRae. That truck also slowed, causing a 25- to 30-foot-long, 4-inch-diameter metal pipe called a drill stem to fly from the truck's roof.

Information in the presentencing report is used to determine federal sentencing guideline ranges.

In March, a federal jury found Arledge, 50, guilty of one count of conspiracy, four counts of mail fraud and two counts of wire fraud for knowingly submitting false Fen-Phen claims on behalf of clients. He was acquitted of one count of wire fraud and 16 counts of money laundering.
