Snyder Wins 14th Game for Augusta

Augusta, GA -- The GreenJackets (50-20, 28-23) powered their way past the Delmarva Shorebirds (34-33, 25-25) on Monday night with an 8-5 win. Starter Ben Snyder won his 14th game of the season and Mike McBryde powered the offense with two home runs and four RBIs.

McBryde led off the sixth and seventh innings with solo home runs, his fifth and sixth home runs of the season. Augusta took an 8-4 lead into the ninth inning before the Shorebirds plated their final run off reliever David Newton to cut the lead to 8-5.

Snyder (14-4) worked five innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits. The lefty walked three and walked four to become the third pitcher in the league to 14 wins.

Augusta trailed 1-0 heading into the bottom of the second inning but plated four runs on four hits to take a 4-1 lead.


Local attorney will serve on committee

Edward G. Sponzilli will serve on the newly established Supreme Court Bench-Bar-Media Committee of the New Jersey Supreme Court.

He is an attorney with the Bridgewater firm Norris McLaughlin & Marcus.

The committee was formed to keep the public informed about the courts in general, as well as about particular court cases through accurate reporting and the underlying mutual cooperation essential to that.In addition, the committee will identify impediments to informing the public about the work of the courts, and will devise solutions and develop protocols to overcome difficulties in reaching the committee's goals.

Sponzilli, who lives in Caldwell, is a certified civil trial attorney with more than 30 years experience in complex corporate and commercial litigation.


Tribune Dispute Settled

A settlement has been reached in a long and contentious legal battle over ownership of the Salt Lake Tribune, but no financial details were released.

MediaNews Group Inc. announced the settlement Wednesday, saying it resolved all litigation that had pitted the Tribune's former owner, the McCarthey family, against Denver-based MediaNews and Management Planning Inc.

Merv Griffin, popular talk-show host and “Jeopardy!†creator, dies

LOS ANGELES – Merv Griffin, who went from big-band era crooner to fabulously successful TV talk show host before making a fortune as the creator of two of television's most popular game shows and then parlaying that into a billion-dollar hotel empire, died Sunday. He was 82.Griffin died of prostate cancer, according to a statement from his the family that was released by Marcia Newberger, spokeswoman for The Griffin Group/Merv Griffin Entertainment. Griffin was recently hospitalized for a recurrence of the disease, which had been treated successfully more than 10 years ago.Griffin, who created the “Wheel of Fortune" and “Jeopardy!" game shows, began his career as a $100-a-week radio singer in San Francisco, quickly moving on to become the featured vocalist in Freddy Martin's band.
